The business came about because I couldn't quite reach
the printer that sits between me and my business partner.
After getting out of my chair for the umpteenth time,
frustration bubbled over: "I'm sick of having to do this".
Moving the printer wasn't an option,
so we retrieved the portable bubble-jet printer
and set it up on the filing cabinet on the other side of my workspace.
For the sake of a couple of minutes effort,
invoices were now printing within arm's reach,
I was no longer wasting time getting up and down
and I felt a lot happier about my work environment.
Which got me thinking.
It's the little things that determine whether a day flows or not.
I figured that if there were opportunities to save time and improve my workplace
there were probably simple, low-cost opportunities in other small businesses.
So I wrote to a few business analysts / project managers
to see whether they thought there was merit in the idea.
We pooled our knowledge about how to identify time-wasteful practices,
prepared a worksheet and trialled the process in a friend's business.
Between observation and questions we identified
a number of tasks that took more minutes than they ought to.
We then offered simple ways in which those tasks could be made easier,
e.g. by making better use of storage space or existing equipment.
